Philando Castile was killed by a police officer during a minor traffic stop. He was pulled over for a broken taillight and wound up dead, with his fiancee and 4-year-old daughter in the car. These stops have also lead to the deaths of Sandra Bland and Walter Scott. Revenue from tickets is a major reason for these traffic stops.

The Atlantic's Conor Friedersdorf argues that police should totally avoid encounters with drivers in traffic stops for minor violations such as a broken taillight. He proposes that police should photograph of the license plate of an accused violator and have the city send a "fix it" ticket to the vehicle's owner. You can read the whole proposal here.
